Whether you are out on a walk or sitting on the deck identifying a bird you see or hear can be a daunting or even intimidating task.  Being able to identify birds visiting your feeders is a great way to know how you can further accommodate them or recognize which ones aren't showing up. Great Plains Nature Center

The Great Plains Nature Center is a cooperative project between the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, Kansas Department of Wildlife & Parks, City of Wichita, and the Friends of the Great Plains Nature Center nonprofit organization. These Partners share a common goal of providing opportunities for the public to investigate, understand and develop an appreciation for wildlife and the environment, while promoting sound stewardship of natural resources.

As well as hosting events and programs they offer free downloadable guides to for different Kansas resources, animals, and plants.

 

Cornell Lab also offers a free online guide for North American species of birds, as well as free courses to help you become better at identifying birds on your own. The most valuable thing they offer, besides research, is the Merlin ID App.  Merlin allows you to identify birds on your phone through its camera or microphone, or ever view birds you should be able to find nearby.
